In February of this year, I published my first Bible study, “ALONE – Socially Distanced but Nigh to God”. To give a little background of how it came to fruition, I’ve included an excerpt of the introduction to the book:
On March 13, 2020, I sent my girls to school that day with specific instructions, “Make sure you bring any items you have at school home with you. You may not be going back this year.”
After they climbed onto the bus, I shopped at three different grocery stores to stock up on the supplies we needed at home to hold us over for a number of weeks. The lines were long, people were panicked, and my phone holds pictures of store shelves completely wiped out of toilet paper, among other various items.
I’m sure many of you have similar stories of the day when news of the coronavirus overwhelmed your hometown and you went into lockdown and quarantine mode. Our home calendar went from each day’s square being filled with appointments and activities, to nothing on the schedule at all for months. One of the biggest holes on my calendar was our ladies’ small group Bible study for the spring and summer. Our intended study was postponed and we were no longer meeting in person. My heart ached for those two hours every week when we opened our Bibles together.
The Lord laid the burden on my heart to continue a study together even though we could not be in the same room. He also laid on my heart the idea that we needed to use this time of isolation and stillness to draw near to Him. God kept bringing to my mind people in the Scriptures who faced times of separation from others, and although their experiences may have been painful, it served a greater purpose to fulfill the Lord’s will. I began to appreciate how being alone doesn’t have to be viewed in a negative light, but instead can be worked together for good. Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, we can always benefit from some much-needed time alone with the Lord to prosper in our walk with Him. This study, “ALONE – Socially Distanced but Nigh to God”, began as weekly emails with lesson attachments to our Bible study group during those several months. It is the result of the burden He laid on my heart and what He showed me in His Word.
Take a 9-week journey through the Bible and learn timeless truths of how one-on-one appointments with the Lord are sometimes just what we need to become who He planned for us to be all along.
